If you are coming to an appointment, especially for the first time, then following these five tips can help you get the most from your time with us.
Allow enough time
If you are coming into our court based offices then be prepared to queue at the security gates. Your bags will be checked and clothing scanned. You’re not allowed to bring in sharp objects or liquids that you are not prepared to drink should be left at home.
If we’re calling you for a phone or online meeting then we’ll try to be punctual but we do have a lot of clients. Try to be in a quiet, private place to receive the call.
Bring your documents
It’s useful for us to see any documents that you have received from the court or the other side especially the latest court orders. As an independent organisation we don’t have access to court records. Bring printed documents or have them ready to view or email from your phone.
Remember
We can only support you with civil matters. These are generally family (child contact, divorce, domestic abuse prevention), housing eviction and money claims. There is a full list here https://supportthroughcourt.org/get-help/how-we-help/our-service-provision/
We can’t help with criminal cases.
We do NOT give legal advice but we do have experience of court process and we can signpost you to other organisations for legal advice.
Tell us what you need
If you can it is useful to make a list of questions or points that you would like to cover – so that you don’t forget anything.
If you need help to express yourself in English then consider asking a friend to help with the language or even bring them with you. We don’t have access to translation services but we are experienced in helping people with reading legal documents, writing statements etc.
Try not to worry
We are here to help and support you. We will listen to your problems and treat you with respect.
Within the court building we can accompany you into hearings and meetings with social workers, opposing solicitors and other parties.
Facing court alone?
If you’re going through the civil and family courts without representation, we can help. Find out more about our in-person and remote services, and book an appointment today.
