My name is Charles, and I’m a volunteer with Support Through Court. I’m also a retired solicitor. I first became involved after a friend who was already volunteering told me about the charity and thought it would be something I’d care deeply about. He was right.
Over the years, I’ve seen first hand how frightening and overwhelming going through court without a lawyer can be. Some of the most harrowing cases we support involve eviction and homelessness. When an individual or a family is facing the prospect of losing their home, we help them understand the court process, explore options that may delay eviction, and connect them with other charities who can support them with rehousing. For these people, our guidance comes at a moment of real crisis.

This year, as Support Through Court marks its 25th anniversary, we’re reflecting on how vital it is that this support continues to be available, especially when so many people are facing uncertainty. Personally, having seen the difference this work makes, I’ve chosen to remember Support Through Court in my own Will.
That’s why we’re offering our supporters the opportunity to write their Will entirely free of charge with FreeWills. Simply answer a few questions online to complete your Will and it it will be checked by a qualified solicitor before being sent to you to print, sign, and witness to make it legally binding. If you already have a will and would like to leave us a gift, you can now download a codicil.
Why leave a gift to Support Through Court?
Over the past quarter-century, we’ve supported people facing some of the most challenging moments of their lives — separation from a partner, disputes over children, eviction, debt, or navigating a court process without legal representation.
Over 25 years, we have helped people on over 650,000 occasions.
What has never changed is the power of being there. Someone to explain what a form means. Someone to help organise papers. Someone to sit beside a person in court, offering calm reassurance when anxiety is high.
That support has been delivered by thousands of dedicated volunteers, alongside staff and partners who believe that access to justice should not depend on whether you can afford a lawyer.
As we mark our 25th anniversary, we’re proud of how far we’ve come — but we’re also very aware of the growing need for our services. More people than ever are navigating the courts without legal representation, and the system remains daunting and complex.
By leaving a gift in your Will, you can help ensure that:
- People facing court without a lawyer continue to receive practical and emotional support
- Families and individuals get a fairer hearing and better access to justice
- Lives are changed for the better — and the justice system becomes fairer for everyone
Your legacy could be the difference between someone facing court alone, and someone walking into court with confidence and dignity.
